Tucker Carlson Introduces Potential New COVID Treatment to Fox News Viewers: Viagra

Fox News host Tucker Carlson isn’t too keen on vaccines – but devoted part of his Friday show to a potential new treatment for COVID-19: Viagra.

Yes, Pfizer’s popular erectile dysfunction drug is being used in a few selected medical trials to determine if it helps treat severe COVID-19 patients, although experts are quick to note that a lot of research still needs to be done before determining its efficiency.

Still, the controversial Fox News host was quick to sing the praises of Viagra, opening the segment by saying it could “save us” from COVID-19.

“Who thought Viagra would save us from the pandemic? Carlson asked, adding, “Dr Marc Siegel may have predicted it,” presenting one of the network’s leading medical contributors, who listed a series of claims about the drug’s effectiveness as a treatment for the disease. pulmonary hypertension and altitude sickness, among others.

“Is there something [Viagra] doesn’t heal? ”Carlson joked.

At one point, a graphic reading “Little Blue Miracle? (referring to the signature blue color of the branded pill) appeared alongside Carlson as he related the story of a COVID-positive UK nurse who claims to have been rescued from the depths of a 28-day coma just before Christmas with a “big dose of Viagra.”

The story of 37-year-old Monica Almedia was first reported this week, along with news that scientists were trying to use the drug – whose previous claim to fame was her penchant for inducing erections reliably – to increase oxygen levels in the blood of hospitalized patients with extremely severe COVID-19.

“It was definitely Viagra that saved me. Within 48 hours it opened my airwaves and my lungs started to respond,” the fully vaccinated nurse told British newspaper “The Sun”, which presented her story. on its cover.

“If you think how [Viagra] works, it dilates your blood vessels. I have asthma and my alveoli needed a little help. “

This isn’t exactly a new idea – Dr. Amesh Adalja, principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins Center, told Salon via email that sildenafil “has been used to modulate blood flow in the lungs for decades.”

But Adalja also quickly noted that this is currently an experimental treatment for use on hospital patients with severe COVID – not something people should be looking for as a home treatment or preventative measure.

“There are studies showing that it can be used in severe COVID patients to help increase blood flow to the lungs and improve oxygenation,” he said. “It is important to realize, however, that the use of sildenafil is intended for a subset of patients with severe COVID and not for routine treatment.”

And despite Almedia’s subsequent calls for people to get vaccinated and take action to protect themselves from the virus, this is the angle of the “miracle cure” that has taken off in the right-wing press, with the New York Post , Daily thread and others devoting full articles to Viagra’s promise as a COVID treatment.

Following the wave of coverage, the idea of using an erectile dysfunction drug to treat COVID-19 appears to be gaining momentum online, with the word ‘viagra’ trending on Twitter and hundreds of site posts. alternative social media such as TrumpWorld frontrunner GETTR. the virtue of this new “remedy”.

“The life you save can be yours,” a user wrote on GETTR alongside a quote from Almedia on how Viagra saved his life. “GET COVID? GET VIAGRA!” another said.

“Viagra. First it cured Alzheimer’s disease and now cures COVID,” one person wrote, referring to another recent segment of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” in which he explored the use of Viagra for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. “Hard to believe.”

It’s unclear whether Viagra will take off as a right-wing alternative COVID-19 drug in the same way as hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin, two well-known but ultimately debunked treatments that rose to prominence after Conservative experts and politicians have championed them as alternatives to vaccination.

In the case of ivermectin, poison hotlines and hospitals were inundated last year with reports of an overdose of a version of the anti-parasitic drug intended for livestock, which they had acquired in a last attempt at prevention and treatment after refusing to be vaccinated. The series of events sparked a lot of teasing online – a trend that was alive and well after Carlson’s Viagra segment on Friday night as well.

A search for “Viagra” on Twitter returned thousands of tweets mocking the idea put forward in some right-wing circles – including several times on the Carlson show – that Pfizer was hiding thousands of vaccine deaths while simultaneously hiding another drug that worked much better against the virus.

“You are all a bunch of sheep supporting BIG PHARMA! Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to the drugstore to buy Covid Viagra because Tucker Carlson told me if I don’t die with a boner I’m a Cuck, “the user wrote. Twitter @GordMacey.

“Of course Viagra treats COVID,” added user @ Westfalljim5. “In fact, the warning regarding side effects has been updated: ‘Seek immediate medical help if you have an INSURECTION that lasts longer than 4 hours’. “
