The presence of widespread drug abuse among women emerged as a major concern when the Department of Health first presented to the Chief Minister.

CM Bhagwan Mann expresses concern

  • Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also expressed concern over low registration of women for death
  • He asked the department to open separate counters for women in all outpatient opioid-assisted treatment clinics.
  • Apart from this, it was decided to open 400 new OOAT clinics covering all primary health centers in the state.

The sources revealed that a senior police officer said that although the number of female drug addicts in Punjab is much higher, only 3% have been registered for treatment.

Even the CM expressed concern about the low registration rate of women for death. He asked the Ministry of Health to open separate counters for women in all outpatient opioid-assisted treatment (OOAT) clinics.

Apart from this, it was decided to open 400 new OOAT clinics covering all primary health centers in the state. The meeting discussed the need to geolocate all clinics in order to be able to check the availability of nearby rehabilitation centers.

To check the dominance of only a few players, it was decided that all private practitioners could be allowed to prescribe lethal drugs.

It was also decided that all MPs should be made aware of the anti-death program to ensure greater community involvement in the campaign.

According to sources, the department said that so far 241 women (189 in Kapurthala and 52 in Phagwara) who use drugs have been enrolled in the programme. Among them, 81 women – 66 in Kapurthala and 15 in Phagwara – were referred to OOAT clinics for treatment. About 46 were admitted to Navkiran Kendras.

Sharing data, the department said that 230 women were tested for HIV. Of the total, 16 were found to be HIV reactive.

Another shocking revelation was that 50 women were found reactive to Hepatitis C and their treatment started in their respective districts.

The expansion of health facilities was also discussed at the meeting. Other facilities such as sub-divisional hospitals would be established and all existing district hospitals would be expanded. Freshly graduated MBBS doctors would be hired by the department during their internship to ensure that there are enough doctors available in the state.
