Ellis should apologize for the treatment of Williams | News, Sports, Jobs

For the editor:

Beware of the inclusion party. In what can only be described as a disturbing and surreal scene, local businessman and aspiring mayoral candidate Jimmy Williams has been vilified by our county lawmaker for the crime of attempting to run for elections. A clearly rigged format and wildly uneven questioning made it clear that Mr Williams was not wanted by some members of the local Democratic leadership. I wonder what they are afraid of.

Instead of simply asking Mr Williams to clarify his residency status, he was bullied and harassed by Ms Ellis and barely allowed to respond. When he was finally allowed to speak, Jimmy approached the matter in his usual manner with honesty and integrity. Jimmy Williams is well within his rights to run for mayor of our village and he intends to do so, intimidation and attempts to discredit him will only fuel his fire. You asked for a fight, congratulations and good luck because your wish came true, come and get some!

Jimmy Williams is a decorated veteran from Saranac Lake, owner of two successful village businesses, and a support man for the young family he chose to (shockingly) raise in his own hometown. Being excoriated for the crime of trying to give back to his community must have been very embarrassing for the grassroots Democrats in attendance. By the way, Jimmy is sinfully guilty of giving back to the community, too many examples to list here. But I will mention the annual Turkey Trot fundraiser, the hugely successful event Jimmy created with his brother and business partner that has raised $198,000 since its inception. Simply put, there is no one else in this village capable of pulling off this event, year after year. Jimmy does.

Ms. Ellis, your behavior was disgraceful in what should be a fair and balanced process, you attacked your own constituent with nothing but your own bias. You owe at least a public apology to Mr. Williams and an apology to your own party. You violated your office, thankfully chose the low ethical road and made it clear that you only represent people in your own party, not all residents of District 7 as you were elected to do. This letter is my personal opinion and was in no way solicited by the candidate.
