ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) – On Thursday, Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $1.6 million award that will go to eight substance abuse service providers across the state, enabling them to establish Mobile Medication Units (MMUs). MMUs will dispense medications to treat substance use disorders, including methadone and buprenorphine.
Officials said this would make it easier for individuals to access treatments and receive these drugs without having to travel to a physical facility. These MMUs will be the first in New York State to be licensed to operate by providers of existing opioid treatment programs, made possible by a Federal Drug Enforcement Administration rule change.
“Lack of transportation or distance from a treatment center should not be a barrier to getting needed addiction care, including life-saving drugs like methadone,” the Office of Services commissioner said. and addictions support, Chinazo Cunningham. “These new Mobile Drug Treatment Units will provide comprehensive addiction services and significant assistance directly to those in need, giving them another opportunity to receive significant help in their recovery.
MMUs are designed to provide New Yorkers seeking treatment for a substance use disorder with access to multiple services in one location, addressing the continued need for comprehensive treatments statewide. A variety of services will be offered, including intake assessments, medication induction, medication administration and observation, toxicology testing, and other medical services.
Additionally, MMUs will complement existing statewide outreach services offered by various opioid treatment program providers, including service assessment, counseling, non-methadone medications for addiction treatment, telepractice and transportation services. The scholarships are administered through OASAS, which is funded by the Federal Federal Grant for the Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse.
